In addition to providing a dependable, locally-controlled water supply, water recycling provides tremendous environmental benefits. By providing an additional source of water, water recycling reduces the strain on the current water supply and can help us find ways to decrease the diversion of water from sensitive ecosystems. Other benefits include decreasing wastewater discharges and reducing and preventing pollution. Recycled water can also be used to create or enhance wetlands and riparian habitats.

  1. Meet with management to gauge their interest in capturing rainwater on site.
  2. Point out gutters, downspouts, or other ideal locations to collect excess rainwater runoff.
  3. Encourage management to purchase a rain barrel or other collection device. The water collected could be used for landscaping providing additional water and monetary savings.
  4. Make it fun! Have a design contest with the winning design painted on the barrel.
